A week strip of seven day cells releases new extension listing cards, busy on the first days and thinning toward the weekend, into a catalog panel with five cards carrying a mint outline.

TL;DR: 1,101 new extensions launched on the VS Code Marketplace from 19 to 25 October 2026. That is 4% fewer than the record week before, but still the second-highest week we have counted. A bit under a third mention AI. Last week's launches have now had a full week: the typical one has 3 installs, and about 13% reached 10. If you launched recently, compare your first 7 days with those figures and with your category's row below.

How many new VS Code extensions launched this week#

1,101 new extensions went live on the Marketplace between Monday 19 October and Sunday 25 October 2026, from 955 publishers. We count each extension on the day of its first public release.

The working week was busier than the week before: Tuesday's 199 is the most launches on a single day since at least the start of September. The weekend was quieter, and Sunday's 83 is the fewest of any day in that time. Some listings take a day or two longer to appear, so Saturday and Sunday may each gain a few.

As in last week's report, we left out listings whose whole description was a placeholder (5 this week) and publishers that released more than 20 extensions in the week. No publisher did that this week, while every week since 7 September had at least one. With the placeholders included, the Marketplace recorded 1,106 new listings.

Bar chart of new Marketplace extensions per week from 14 September to 19 October 2026: 885, 970, 945, 994, 1,151 and 1,101, with the number that mention AI in each week: 320, 301, 319, 339, 384 and 315

We count every week again each time we write this report, so some earlier figures differ by one or two from last week's table. Late listings and edited descriptions account for the difference.

On Open VSX, 359 new listings appeared in the same week, down from 502, and none came from a high-volume publisher. Open VSX is a separate registry, so we count it separately.

What kinds of extensions launched#

315 of the week's 1,101 new Marketplace extensions (29%) mention AI in their name, description or tags. Last week it was 384 of 1,151 (33%), so AI launches fell by more than the total did.

Publishers choose their own categories, and an extension can have several, so this column adds up to more than 1,101:

339 launches used only "Other", about the same as the week before (338). 192 of the 1,101 were also on Open VSX under the same ID so far. Publishers often add the Open VSX listing later, so that number usually grows.

How last week's launches did after 7 days#

The 1,151 launches of 12–18 October have now had a full week. We read each one's Marketplace install count 7 days after its release, and 1,102 had a reading on that day.

The typical launch (the median) had 3 installs, the same as in each of the five weeks we measured before. 147 of them, about 13%, reached 10, down from 16% the week before. A handful of installs after your first week is still normal.

Debuggers and Themes led for a fourth week:

Launches with a specific category reached 10 installs about twice as often as those left only in "Other": 15% against 8%, the same gap as the week before. The table shows which launches did better, not why.

Standout launches of the week#

30 of the 1,101 new launches reached 20 installs by 26 October, against 29 the week before. Six categories had one that met the rules in the section below.

CategoryExtensionWhat it doesInstalls on 26 Oct
Otherlive-serve-rsA Live Server alternative: a small native server that reloads the page on save, with no Node.js250
FormattersAutoInserts semicolons as you type in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript and other C-style languages, offline60

ThemesSourceInsight-ReaderSource Insight-style code reading for C/C++, Java and Python, with definition previews and call graphs22

SourceInsight-Reader is a code-reading tool rather than a color theme, but Themes is the first category its publisher chose, so that is where our rule puts it.

Earlier launches still climbing#

These launched between 5 and 18 October and gained installs on at least 6 of the 7 days to 26 October. They are ranked by installs gained in that week.

Four of the five were on this list last week too. Lodestar gained between 283 and 676 installs every day and more than doubled. Pi was last week's Testing pick.

How last week's picks did#

All nine of last week's category picks are still listed, and each gained installs.

How we picked these#

These picks are not sponsored, and we haven't reviewed their code. The rules are the same as last week. An extension was eligible if it:

  • was still listed on the Marketplace on 26 October,
  • links a public source repository that opened when we checked it,
  • has a real description, not a placeholder,
  • comes from a publisher with fewer than 1 million installs across all its extensions and no more than 20 launches that week, and
  • is not one of ours.

New launches also needed at least 20 installs, and none of them could have gained more than 500 installs in a single day, or most of its installs in one day with almost none after. Each one is listed under the first category its publisher chose. For the climbing list, gaining installs on 6 of 7 days does the same job.

This week the rules left out more than usual. The Themes launch with the most installs gained 1,823 of them on a single day. Both AI launches with 20 or more installs got most of theirs on one day, with almost none after. The climbing list passes over the week's largest climber, an AI coding agent that gained nearly 11,000 installs, because it links no source repository. The Themes pick would have been a different launch, but its repository link did not open, and the Education launch with the most installs links no repository.

What to check after your first week#

If you launched in the last two weeks, these checks use the figures above:

  • Installs after 7 days: compare yours with the median of 3 and with your category's row. Reaching 10 puts you ahead of about 87% of launches.
  • Category: 339 of this week's launches are only in "Other", and those reached 10 installs about half as often last week. If yours is one, set the categories field in your extension manifest to one that fits.
  • Display name: include the words people search for. Our keyword guide shows how to choose them.
  • Source link: set the repository field in the same manifest and keep the repository public, so people can read the code before they install. This week, three extensions lost a place on this page to a missing or broken link.
  • Daily gains: look for installs arriving on most days, not in one jump. Every extension in the climbing list gained on all 7 days.

How we counted#

  • Weeks run Monday to Sunday, in UTC.
  • Marketplace launches are counted on the first public release date the Marketplace reports. New listings can take up to three days to appear in the catalog. We counted on 26 October, the day after the week ended, so this week's figure may still rise slightly. Open VSX launches are counted on the day VSXRank first saw them.
  • Left out: listings whose whole description was "app", "First one" or empty, and any publisher with more than 20 launches in that week. Both rules apply to every week in this post.
  • AI launches are those whose name, description or tags include words such as AI, LLM, agent, Claude, Copilot, MCP, Codex, Gemini, GPT, OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor, Ollama or prompt. This is a word match, so it will miss some AI tools and include a few that only mention AI.
  • Installs come from the Marketplace's public counter, which we read every day at 00:00 UTC. "After 7 days" is the reading 7 days after the release date. The standout and climbing tables use the reading of Monday 26 October, the day after the week ended, as earlier reports did. When the Marketplace showed no install figure for a listing, we counted 0. When we had no reading for that day (49 launches), we left the extension out.
