TL;DR: 1,151 new extensions launched on the VS Code Marketplace from 12 to 18 October 2026. That is 16% more than the week before and the most in the eight weeks we have counted. About a third mention AI. Last week's launches have now had a full week: the typical one has 3 installs, and about 16% reached 10. If you launched recently, compare your first 7 days with those figures and with your category's row below.
How many new VS Code extensions launched this week#
1,151 new extensions went live on the Marketplace between Monday 12 October and Sunday 18 October 2026, from 1,039 publishers. It is the first week with more than 1,000 publishers. We count each extension on the day of its first public release.
| Day | New extensions |
|---|---|
| Mon 12 Oct | 168 |
| Tue 13 Oct | 142 |
| Wed 14 Oct | 176 |
| Thu 15 Oct | 179 |
| Fri 16 Oct | 169 |
| Sat 17 Oct | 160 |
| Sun 18 Oct | 157 |
| Total | 1,151 |
The rise was spread across the week. No single day had fewer than 142 launches, while the week before had two days under 125.
Two groups are left out of that count, as in last week's report. The first is 66 listings from two publishers that each released more than 20 extensions in the week (36 and 30). The second is 3 listings whose whole description was a placeholder. With both groups included, the Marketplace recorded 1,220 new listings.

| Week starting | New extensions | Mention AI |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Sep 2026 | 866 | 282 |
| 14 Sep 2026 | 885 | 320 |
| 21 Sep 2026 | 969 | 301 |
| 28 Sep 2026 | 945 | 318 |
| 5 Oct 2026 | 994 | 339 |
| 12 Oct 2026 | 1,151 | 382 |
We count every week again each time we write this report, so some earlier figures differ by up to five from last week's table. Late listings and edited descriptions account for the difference.
On Open VSX, 502 new listings appeared in the same week, 44 of them from two high-volume publishers. Open VSX is a separate registry, so we count it separately.
What kinds of extensions launched#
A third of the week's new Marketplace extensions (382 of 1,151) mention AI in their name, description or tags. Last week it was 339 of 994.
| Mentions | 5–11 Oct | 12–18 Oct |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | 130 | 121 |
| Copilot | 67 | 81 |
| MCP | 52 | 66 |
| Codex | 62 | 64 |
Claude was the only name in the table mentioned less often than the week before, even as the total grew.
Publishers choose their own categories, and an extension can have several, so this column adds up to more than 1,151:
| Category | New extensions |
|---|---|
| Other | 340 |
| Programming Languages | 298 |
| Visualization | 185 |
| AI | 168 |
| Linters | 130 |
| Themes | 86 |
| Snippets | 71 |
| Chat | 63 |
| Formatters | 62 |
| Education | 50 |
| SCM Providers | 46 |
| Machine Learning | 45 |
| Testing | 44 |
| Data Science | 43 |
| Debuggers | 39 |
340 launches used only "Other", up from 321 the week before. 279 of the 1,151 were also on Open VSX under the same ID.
How last week's launches did after 7 days#
The 994 launches of 5–11 October have now had a full week. We read each one's Marketplace install count 7 days after its release, and 959 had a reading on that day.
| Installs after 7 days | Extensions |
|---|---|
| 0 | 96 |
| 1–2 | 356 |
| 3–9 | 357 |
| 10–99 | 133 |
| 100–999 | 15 |
| 1,000 or more | 2 |
| Total | 959 |
The typical launch (the median) had 3 installs, the same as in each of the four weeks we measured before. 150 of them, about 16%, reached 10, up from 13% the week before. A handful of installs after your first week is still normal.
Debuggers and Themes led for a third week:
| Category | Launches | Median installs after 7 days | Reached 10 or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debuggers | 26 | 8 | 46% |
| Themes | 75 | 8 | 37% |
| Chat | 62 | 5 | 34% |
| AI | 135 | 3 | 26% |
| Formatters | 46 | 3 | 24% |
| Visualization | 141 | 4 | 21% |
| Machine Learning | 35 | 3 | 20% |
| Linters | 94 | 2 | 19% |
| Testing | 43 | 3 | 16% |
| Snippets | 62 | 2 | 16% |
| Programming Languages | 238 | 2 | 16% |
| Education | 35 | 2 | 11% |
| Other | 304 | 2 | 9% |
| SCM Providers | 51 | 3 | 6% |
Launches with a specific category reached 10 installs about twice as often as those left only in "Other": 19% against 9%. The table shows which launches did better, not why.

Earlier launches still climbing#
These launched between 28 September and 11 October and gained installs on at least 6 of the 7 days to 19 October. They are ranked by installs gained in that week.
| Extension | What it does | 12 Oct | 19 Oct | Gained |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lodestar | Codemaps, code reviews and hover explanations on the models already in your editor | 16 | 2,693 | +2,677 |
| Command Code for VS Code | A coding agent built for open models | 129 | 825 | +696 |
| Agent Standup | Shows which Claude Code and Codex agents are working, stuck or waiting for you | 72 | 445 | +373 |

| TeX Side Preview | LaTeX with a live side-by-side PDF and two-way Overleaf sync | 0 | 321 | +321 |
Lodestar gained installs every day of the week, and its daily gain went from 123 on 13 October to 1,151 on 19 October. Command Code was last week's Programming Languages pick. TeX Side Preview had no install figure on 12 October, the day after its release.
How last week's picks did#
All nine of last week's category picks are still listed, and each gained installs.
| Extension | 12 Oct | 19 Oct |
|---|---|---|
| Command Code for VS Code | 129 | 825 |
| CC Switch | 67 | 321 |
| CodeBuddy Quota | 106 | 287 |
| F-GitGraph | 104 | 224 |
| OpenCode v2 Terminal | 77 | 212 |
| AI Pair | 75 | 99 |
| MsgPack Explorer | 44 | 84 |
| Serena | 25 | 43 |
| Sphinx Challenges | 22 | 34 |
How we picked these#
These picks are not sponsored, and we haven't reviewed their code. The rules are the same as last week. An extension was eligible if it:
- was still listed on the Marketplace on 19 October,
- links a public source repository that opened when we checked it,
- has a real description, not a placeholder,
- comes from a publisher with fewer than 1 million installs across all its extensions and no more than 20 launches that week, and
- is not one of ours.
New launches also needed at least 20 installs, and none of them could have gained more than 500 installs in a single day, or most of its installs in one day with almost none after. Each one is listed under the first category its publisher chose. For the climbing list, gaining installs on 6 of 7 days does the same job. This week the rules passed over a Programming Languages launch with more installs than DBML Diagrams, because it links no source repository.
What to check after your first week#
If you launched in the last two weeks, these checks use the figures above:
- Installs after 7 days: compare yours with the median of 3 and with your category's row. Reaching 10 puts you ahead of about 84% of launches.
- Category: 340 of this week's launches are only in "Other", and those reached 10 installs half as often last week. If yours is one, set the
categoriesfield in your extension manifest to one that fits. - Display name: include the words people search for. Our keyword guide shows how to choose them.
- Source link: set the
repositoryfield in the same manifest and keep the repository public, so people can read the code before they install. - Daily gains: look for installs arriving on most days, not in one jump. Every extension in the climbing list gained on all 7 days.
How we counted#
- Weeks run Monday to Sunday, in UTC.
- Marketplace launches are counted on the first public release date the Marketplace reports. New listings can take up to three days to appear in the catalog, so this count includes listings that appeared after the week ended. Open VSX launches are counted on the day VSXRank first saw them.
- Left out: listings whose whole description was "app", "First one" or empty, and any publisher with more than 20 launches in that week. Both rules apply to every week in this post.
- AI launches are those whose name, description or tags include words such as AI, LLM, agent, Claude, Copilot, MCP, Codex, Gemini, GPT, OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor, Ollama or prompt. This is a word match, so it will miss some AI tools and include a few that only mention AI.
- Installs come from the Marketplace's public counter, which we read every day at 00:00 UTC. "After 7 days" is the reading 7 days after the release date. The standout and climbing tables use the reading of Monday 19 October, the day after the week ended, as earlier reports did. When the Marketplace showed no install figure for a listing, we counted 0. When we had no reading for that day (35 launches), we left the extension out.
